BOLJUN · The village

A village written in stone.

Boljun rewards attention: a carved inscription, a sheltered loggia, a doorway worn smooth. Its castle is the landmark, but the pleasure is in everything around it.

The castle
01A landmark above the valley

The castle

Built and extended over centuries, Boljun’s medieval castle anchors the old settlement. Take time with its walls, then look beyond them: the position of the village tells its own story.

Access to the castle interior can vary. Enjoy the exterior and check locally before planning an interior visit.

02The shape of everyday history

The loggia & granary

The loggia once brought Boljun’s mayors and judges together. Behind it stands the kašća, the granary where agricultural dues were stored. Together they make the village’s civic past tangible.

Pause in the square and look at the relationship between its working buildings, houses and public space.

St George & the Glagolitic traces

The parish church of St George preserves a late Gothic sanctuary and Glagolitic inscriptions. The old script connects Boljun to a wider Istrian story of writing, worship and local identity.

Church interiors may be closed outside services. Respect worshippers and ask locally about access.

The stone lanes

Boljun is also a lived-in village. Notice its stone houses, thresholds and small changes of level. A short walk becomes richer when you give ordinary details the same attention as the monuments.

Keep voices low, leave doorways clear and photograph homes with consideration.
